Tim Burton has lost his edge. His last three films were adaptations from other peoples works. Don't get me wrong. He is a true stylist within the Hollywood machine but he is at his best when working from his own canvas. The surreal twists can spring from his own imagination and not someone elses. the trailers i've seen for Alice in Wonderland look beautifully surreal. i have high hopes for that film. we'll see how it goes...
as far as trippy films - not sure if this has been mentioned, but eXistenZ definitely falls into the WTF category. its virtual reality theme and its classic Cronenberg stomach-wrenching rawness make for a wonderfully freaky film. as long as you can get past the fact that Jude Law is the lead...
