I have to disagree with you here, it's the best new film i've seen this year by a country mile (mind you i've not been watching many, cudja tell?)... the supporting roles all seemed fine to me, and from what I remember they got the balance of fear and tenderness (as you put it) just right. Loved the exteriors and the cinematography as well.
The ending in particular was more sinister and open-ended than one might have expected... hopefully there won't be a sequel but there's a pointless Holywüd remake in the works.
It's been a while since I saw it so I will have to go back and see if I can understand where you're coming from on the acting.
