While South Park does use some of the cliches over and over, but it still churns out some terrific episodes even if not as often as it used to.
And while it does use cliches, the show is very aware of itself and often pokes fun of the cliche's it uses. The Pandemic episode for example poked fun of how the kids hatching some simple scheme always gets them involved in some convoluted conspiracy. And the Butt Out episode poked fun of how the adults always overreact to everything and how the kids always have to do a speech about what they learned.
Another great episode is Quest for Ratings, which poked fun of Matt and Trey's struggle to come up with new ideas.
I think this is one of the things that has kept South Park more funny and endearing than other long running cartoon shows.
