Rock on
Hey Bugeyes_7. Yeah, in my opion, Hopesfall aren't really that emo. I look at emo as more of a soft acoustical kind of tune. That's just what I'd classify as emo. Guys like Elliott Smith, old Bright Eyes, AFarewellToArms, and maybe some Peppermint Confederacy are in my opinion more on the emo side. If you haven't heard any of these guys, check 'em out for sure. They are all pretty good, besides maybe AFarewellToArms who gets very whiny-voiced. I think that bands like Hopesfall, Hawthorne Heights, and most of the bands you see headlining the Vans Warped Tour are more on the pop-rock/punk side. Not much emo going on there. Sure, some of the lyrics are what some would call emo, but those people don't really know much about deep feeling lyrics. I think a funny one is Matchbook Romance, who has a lyric that says: "My eyes burn from the tears". This lyric is a prime example of what I mean about the main idea of what emo is. I think emo is really when the lyrics have meanings like this, only they are hidden. Good songwriters have a way of covering up what they are saying. They don't use many words like "crying", "tears", "broken heart", and other whiny things like that. Listen to Elliott Smith. His lyrics aren't incredible, but I find his music to be pretty damn good on the whole. A good starter song for you probably is either "Coming Up Roses", "2:45 am", or "Speed Trials". These are all pretty good tunes. I'd check out Bright Eyes too. Conor Oberst's new stuff doesn't really touch much on emo with the exception of perhaps "Lua" or "Take it Easy (Love Nothing)". But his older stuff is pretty soft and emo-ish. Check out "It's Cool, We Can Still Be Friends". Anyways, I hope I answered your question and more. Keep listening to music.
