I'd check out a beginner's guide if you end up doing it. I tried to listen to 4 or 5 of their songs before but only one that I liked and I don't remember what it was called or what album it was from. From your description of them, though, it would definitely be worth going back and listening to some more songs, there's probably a good chance I heard some bad ones. If you don't do that though, is there a specific album you'd recommend?
