I think you're missing the point of the kissing ass and being nice thing, nobody
asked you to kiss ass or be nice, it was simply a case of "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all" and I'd recommend treating people in a manner that you would like to be treated, being nice is a two way street you know.
