Dragon Age is awesome but the combat can be rough. i'm getting seriously roughed up by a corrupted spider queen at the moment. tried a half dozen times tonight.
I just finished Dragon Age and now I want an expansion! While I don't think it eclipses the BG series, in my mind it stands up to its title as the spiritual successor. The story is immersive, the characters have personality, the quests aren't bad but could be a little more varied and the sparse puzzles are good. I think the best thing about it (even better than BG) is the balance. I like that they didn't dumb it down and I like that it's challenging enough to the point that I have to think about tactics in combat and spells/abilities aren't just redundant periodic rewards... they really affect your gameplay/tactics.

That spider queen battle was pretty brutal - I think I had to lower the difficulty for that one. I played through the game with my main char as a dual weapon warrior, Alistair with sword/shield, Leliana with dual weapons and Morrigan. I regret not enchanting my weapons until the end of the game.

As for Morrigan's spells, I found crowd control to be crucial and these are the ones I made use of:

* Cone of Cold / Crushing Prison - a good combo since the former works on pretty much every foe in the game and crushing prison shatters a lot of them.
* Force Field - essential for taking a particular strong enemy out of action for a bit while you hack its minions to bits. Good for incapacitating mages at the back of a mob too.
* Misdirection/Death Hex - I didn't use these as much as I should have, but they're quite brutal
* Sleep / Waking Horror - wreaks mayhem
* Blizzard - awesome for large numbers of enemies and you can cast it on a mob from outside their room if you're feeling cheap.
* Heal / Group Heal - the former is indispensable and the latter requires you to choose a spirit healer specialisation but it's definitely worth it, especially if the Heal cooldown is causing problems
* Mind Blast - the stun period is very short but it's a good oh **** button if your tank is surrounded by enemies and is one shot from death.

So in summary, plenty of CC, an elemental line, a healing spell or two and some ruthless hexes. I would like to have tried the paralyse and chain lightning spells too. Warrior riposte and rogue dirty fighting are also great for boss CC.

And this must be nerdiest post I've ever made.
