Actually, Terry Gilliam admits in an audio commentary to Brazil to never having read George Orwell's 1984 although he did say it was an inspiration.
I much prefer the title Brazil which of course is a reference to the song Aquarela Do Brasil (now usually just called Brazil) .. which is used in the movie to represent Sam's dream of love and freedom from the suffocating society he is and becomes more so a victim of.
