I don't think the intention was "ooh look at these two losers make a sh*tty horror movie, laugh at them", I think Chris Smith just found them to be two very interesting, likable guys, and they are.
I love this movie, but to each his own I guess.

Well part of it for me was I didn't find Mark Borchardt to be particularly likable and found his effect on the people around him to be pretty depressing. I'm not saying I didn't like the movie, in fact I liked it quite a bit. I just didn't think it was particularly funny and I certainly didn't see anything inspiring about it.
