I don't think the intention was "ooh look at these two losers make a sh*tty horror movie, laugh at them", I think Chris Smith just found them to be two very interesting, likable guys, and they are.
I love this movie, but to each his own I guess.

It was depressing because at you look at all these dude's whose lives are ****ed. His fat friend's brain is obviously melted from some major drug abuse. The main director is a clear alcoholic. They all still live with their parents.
Dudes been a paper boy for 30 years. Don't get me wrong, they're all still loveable, its just sad to see how stuck they are.
