i always thought it was an issue with aggression vs. safety. guys are generally more aggressive and competitive, and in some cases raised to see their car as an extension of their dingdongs. in turn more aggressive driving and accidents.
women try to be too safe and end up causing lots of potential accidents due to overcompensating. like the old ladies who drive no more than 70 on the highway (limit is 110) because they think they're being safer by moving significantly slower than the flow of traffic around them.
age definitely seems like big factor to me.
