Starting pushing through the massive cache I picked up, there are some real gems here. While it's still fresh, here's two of the better ones:
Alice Coltrane - Journey in Satchidananda (1970)
Wonderful free jazz ensemble led by a poetically spiritual composer named Alice Coltrane (no relation to John) filled to the brim with lush melodies and some great improvisation. I have no idea where Satchidananda is but it sounds lovely.
Donny Hathaway - Everything Is Everything (1970)
I have no heard soul this soulful in quite some time. The vocals are just as good as G
aye ever was, and the funky instrumental interludes bring the music to a whole new caliber. Another pianist, this guy commanded impressive control over both his voice and his instrumental talents, no doubt about that.
Both I heavily recommend to anyone who has a nominal interest in soul or jazz. These are easily five-star albums.
