AiC is my favorite band by far. I'm not sure why but, to me, when Layne's voice wraps its painfully beautiful self around the band's lyrics, I find myself clinging to every word like they're the only things in this world that accurately convey how I feel. Both Layne and Jerry wrote songs that aren't far from poetic in nature. And the harmonies? God, are they amazing. I love every single song of theirs and I feel as if no other band even compares. That's my opinion of course, but I honestly feel as if they were, in an agreeable sense, the last wave of honest and pure music that we're every going to be lucky enough to have caress our ears.

Examples of their lyrics;

I mean, I could go on, but that'd just be over exertion. They are intensely diverse as well. 'We Die Young' to 'Don't Follow' to 'I Know Somethin' (Bout You)' to 'Nutshell' to 'Rotten Apple' to 'Love, Hate, Love' to freakin' 'Real Thing'. They're all far from similar and are all well written pieces.

Now, this is where I start to sound like a fanboy lunatic to most people, but these observations are not unfounded or baselss. AiC created modern day rock. Godsmack, Creed, and Candelbox are or were regarded as immensely talented when they hit the scene (sadly). For starters, 'God Smack' is the name of an Alice in Chains song, as already mentioned. Sully whateverisuglyfaceisnamed, like Creed's ***gy singer of whose name I would say I forgot had I actually known it in the first place, of Godsmack makes an obvious attempt to sound like Layne in everything he does. It's like they said, "Yo, guys, I got this plan to get us rich off our asses. Let's take some songs by Alice in Chains and just like, you know, make them heavier and take out all of that dynamic bull****. Americans don't appreicate it anyway." And Candlebox? Give me a ****ing break, they are a direct ****ing rip off.

Show a picture of Kurt Cobain to anyone from the ages of 13 to 34 and they will recognize it. Show them a picture of Layne Staley and no one will know. Hardly anyone gave Layne or the rest of AiC the credit they, especially Layne, deserved. I mean, for ****'s sake, at the Grammy's following Layne's death, where AiC actually had a song nominated, Layne wasn't even on the God damn R.I.P. slide-show of artists who had passed away that year. How horrible is that? Layne had friends all around who appreciated, and still do, his talent, but no one in the mainstream gave a ****. He wasn't the pretty, media friendly face of Kurt. Kurt was a crybaby and he made it known so. He was painted to be this broken, beaten, and defeated idol whose music was oh-so innovative and different. Then when he shot himself, it was like he was some sort of damn martyr who was in so much emotional pain that he couldn't possibly bare to live another day. The media portrayal of Layne:
