I think they let Cynthia Watros go because of the drunk driving incident (She got caught a few minutes after Michelle Rodriguez). Even though it's confirmed that she will be back, but doubt that will really explain her character.

I think they were sent to the island because all three of them had a previous connection to the island. All three was also candidates (scratched out) according to MiBs cave and the Lighthouse dial. IMO, the whole science team was a ruse to get them there. If there was a
specific scientific mission, they haven't mentioned it yet. Daniel was there to initiate "The Incident" and Miles helped convince his father to evacuate the Island.

To brainwash people. When the Others took over the DI, it's highly likely that they added the "Jacob" messages. I'm also pretty sure that Ben put Karl in Room 23 because he was pissed. Don't know why Walt was in there. Maybe they'll explain that one later...maybe.
