They didn't have the necessary funds to go into the studio and record an album, so they appealed to their fans and with the contributions of around 50 or so people pooled together enough money to finance, record, and distribute the album for free as a courtesy to their fans. this is the only way i'd back up the idea. to support something that's already somewhat done where you can get a rough idea of the final product.
just fronting money for someone to go into a studio and hopefully have something you like come out the other end? that's the whole point of a label.
