The government does enough to prop up our economy as is. The major reason we are in debt is just careless spending. The amount of federal workers we have right now is ridiculous, it's more of a glorified welfare program than anything.
And even economists struggle to predict slumps and recessions, because if they were that great at it they wouldn't be economists.
