Worth mentioning is of course that although we're not sending a lot of people into space, some of the things from Boo's post are being worked on. For example, there is still research going on for example on terraforming. I read a scientific article not too long ago about using mirrors in orbit around Mars which I'm fairly sure wasn't that old. It's just a bit harder to notice the smarties thinking in their offices compared to the funding, explosions and death defying drama of the manned explorations.
