I don't think he's that great. He just became a big star because of his uncle Francis Ford Coppola. I don't think he really earned his stripes as a good actor.
One of my favourite actors is Tom Cruise.
Yes, his personal life got messed up and people lost respect for him after he jumped on Oprah's couch and started preaching his religious crap to everybody, but all that aside I think this guy has talent. Of course there's Top Gun, but he was also excellent in films like A Few Good Men (with Nicholson), Jerry Maguire, Rain Man (with Hoffmann), Interview With the Vampire (with Brad Pitt - ughhh) and Mission Impossible. I gained so much more respect for him as an actor after watching him play the bad guy in Collateral. Most people seem to think he's crap though...
