I liked Homm5 .. I thought if felt a bit like a return to homm2 which is my favourite of the bunch. You're right that the single player campaign is too hard though, but hot seating with friends was still awesome. At least we had a lot of fun with it!
The RPG series is something I have tried back in the 90s. I can't remember which I played, though. It had graphics roughly like what you see in one of those vids, though, so it may have been one of them. I was quite impressed when I played it, I remember. RPGs where you could wander around freely always impressed me although I didn't finish too many of then, like Might & Magic, Daggerfall, Thunderscape and Ravenloft: Stradh's Possession ..
In the end I think, although I liked the games, they were ofte a little confusing perhaps. Thunderscape f.ex had some areas that were pretty tricky to find your way out of, like some caves you have to navigate through early in the game.
