I wouldn't have guessed. I grew up wading in a river with a lot of carp and enjoyed watching them. I have strong memories of boys picking up the carp and bashing them against the pillars of a concrete underpass, leaving blood spots. Since I was a much smaller girl then, there was little I could do. Another dislike of mine: cruelty.

Hope you two enjoyed your Wii Sports match! We don't have the dogfights on our Wii Sports. I believe what you have is Wii Sports Resorts, which is a newer version. We have the regular Wii Sports which came with the console put out several years ago. I originally bought the Wii for my daughter who quickly lost interest. My son, on the other hand, loves it! We play the tennis, bowling, and baseball together most often. I try to restrict his play time mostly to weekends - otherwise he'd never get off the thing!

Oh yes, ours is fairly new, Liz...a gift from grandparents. We play tennis and bowling. Recently my child said "TV and computer are my hobbies." I think our time restrictions aren't working!

I was thinking along the lines of how women and men are very different but can be complementary in those differences, and how that can sometimes be a nice thing. Like, I think it's nice if a man holds open the door for you or is generally gentlemanly. Or, as a woman it gives me pleasure to be nurturing and supportive in various ways. I think retaining a bit of those "traditional" behaviors helps men and women express appreciation for each other. Oh, I very much agree that people showing appreciation for others is wonderful. What I don't like is when apparently "appreciative" behaviors are enforced as a way to create a divide between men and women, and usually put men in power over women.
For example, the opening of doors: once when a man opened a door for me, I thanked him and went in. There was a second set of doors just beyond, and so I opened the second door for him. But he refused to go in. I said, "No, please, it's only fair." Yet he refused to go in and got angry at me. So this made me see he wasn't trying to be appreciative and kind at all to me as a person...he was just wanting me to abide by *his* rule that "the woman should let the man open the door for her."
Another example: at my in-laws house at any religious feast (Easter, Christmas), it is always the oldest *man* present who prays. Never the oldest woman.

I grew up with my bedroom sometimes full of pet birds...around 10 of them at one point! And I always like watching birds out in nature, too, Liz. You were all probably very good bird-watchers...just it is hard to see more than pigeons, sparrows, and a few robins in cities and towns. That's a cute image of you and your friends in your bird club with field guides in hand!

You see, Liz, maybe you need some
exposure. I go to a local pet store so that my child sees other animals besides humans, cats, dogs, rabbits, and crows...and though it is depressing there (very stinky), I do enjoy petting the rabbits and touching the birds' beaks (they like to taste my finger with their little tongues), and....prepare yourself...going into the rat and mice room! The little rats are sniffing sniffing sniffing and so I hold my finger out and let them sniff my finger! They are so eager. I always feel sad, thinking they'll end up in someone's boa.

I do find my body crackles a lot more than it used to, especially when I get up from bed! A friend of mine's mom joked about getting older by saying life becomes like Rice Crispies: you get more snap, crackle, and pop in the morning!

Exactly! The pedestrians are so appreciative! They expect drivers to plow on through and ignore them, so when you don't they are shocked and relieved and pleased! I get quite frustrated when I see people in big heavy cars ignoring the squishy humans waiting desperately to cross the street.

That would be nice, Liz, if it were/is true. I am happy to have just met kind people in my life. I will be satisfied with that. Still...it would be nice if people received their own personal "scarlet ribbons" in life! There are so many instances when people don't.

I totally understand how strong the addiction to smoking can be, because I used to smoke prior to my first pregnancy. I have not smoked since. It was easier for me because I had a very strong motive for quitting.

One of my best friends from childhood stopped smoking before pregnancy, too, Liz. She had smoked since she was a teenager. Long ago I wrote a poem about her smoking that I've been meaning to turn into a song...maybe I will now! I'm glad you were able to quit!
