But yeah, odd, I've never known anyone in my life who drinks light beer apart from my father when he doesn't want to get drunk but still enjoy a few brews with friends or whatever.

I had a similar conversation with Urban about light beer a while ago and I'm wondering if you might be coming from same perspective that he was. Apparently in Europe, maybe in Australia too, light beer means that it has a lower alcohol content. This is not the case in the US. Here, light beer just means it has less calories. In some cases, if I remember correctly Bud Light versus Guinness is one example, American light beer actually has a
higher percentage of alcohol than heavier beers. Couple that with the fact that you can drink more of it and, yeah, it's a lot easier to get drunk off of.
