Apparently in Europe, maybe in Australia too, light beer means that it has a lower alcohol content. This is not the case in the US. Here, light beer just means it has less calories. In some cases, if I remember correctly Bud Light versus Guinness is one example, American light beer actually has a higher percentage of alcohol than heavier beers. Couple that with the fact that you can drink more of it and, yeah, it's a lot easier to get drunk off of.
