I'll be the first one to get on the soap box with you when it comes to elitist mother****ers crying "sell out" when a band gets some commercial success, or releases material that is more accessible than what they've built their fan base on. But Metallica...The Black Album...that's a watershed album if their ever was one, and not a good one.

I really don't think The Black Album is
that bad, it certainly pales in comparison to their previous work and it's not one of their best by any means but I don't think it's awful like their later work would get. It's ok.
I do think And Justice for All is a very good album from the Newsted era.
