i did exactly this for a few years and Dali is right. a slight investment in recording gear would make a WORLD of difference in quality. in the meantime the only solution is the painstaking process of adjusting your amp levels to the recording device. so it might not sound loud 'enough' on the floor when you're playing (especially in a live band setting) but the recording quality will increase significantly.

problem is the only way to test and figure out what those sweet settings are is trial and error.

also if you use a lot of live effects, turn them down a notch, then turn them down a little more before recording (especially fuzz or flanger). less is always WAY more when it comes to recording effects.
