I've never heard
'Bound', so I really don't have a basis for comparison, but I do know that the trumpet is a stubborn instrument, melodically speaking, to break out of the confines of the jazz idiom, and I think Cuong Vu does it beautifully on
'Residual'. I do know that I have a pretty short attention span even for most above par attempts at fusion, free jazz, or post-rock, so the fact that I not only can listen to this album, but actually love it really says a lot.
