I definitely think someone is trying to use too many uncommon words and therefore seems to be perhaps ruining whatever message the song is attempting to convey by giving too much of a "hey look at the words I know and how learned I am" vibe. However, I do like alliteration, probably more than one should like a literary device, so I kind of enjoyed the first quote.
That being said, I wouldn't say this necessarily makes it "pretentious". I'll admit, though, that I don't really like the word pretentious anyway, it seems to be thrown around in music far too often when it's rarely applicable.
