Black Metal is my favorite metal. Mostly because it is so atmospheric. I'm pretty sure I was only able to get into it because of shoegaze...black metal is like the opposite extreme of that. Death Metal can be good, but it can be way too technical. I can listen to a few songs at a time before my brain wants some time to relax (depending on the band, of course). Sigh's Sonicscape is brilliant, btw.

Carpathian Forest - Defending the Throne of Evil
Though this album is still relatively new, these guys have been around since 90. Some great straightforward Norwegian black metal. The vocals are still brutal but unusually clear. I love that.
Edit: And Pete, if you like Sigh I would check this out (if you haven't already). The last half of the album would be right up your alley.
