the worse thing about Bungle's influence is that it seems to have inspired a bunch of relatively talented kids into ditching their creativity so they could be mimics instead. rather than recognizing the greatness of Bungle's ability to weave a myriad of genres fluidly into one piece and finding their own scraps of mainstream styles that could be folded into a new dress, they play circus funk. great. and your vocalist creates lyrics using Penthouse magazine and a thesaurus... fabulous.
Bungle and FNM were the first bands which came to mind for me... nu-metal owes its basslines to Billy Gould.

Pantera is definitely a candidate - it's them and Exhorder who spawned loads of tough-guy groove metal bands.

As much as I like Rush, I can't help but think that they had a lot of influence on some terrible prog metal. Not just because of the virtuosity, but because they were really more metallic sounding than a lot of the prog bands of the time.

I don't mind that Maiden inspired a slew of cheesy heavy metal bands as it's only natural as that's what was popular at the time. What bothers me is all of the power metal which followed, and the fact that despite virtually every single power metal vocalist imitating Bruce Dickinson, none of them come remotely close to him... most of them aren't even close to being listenable

Oh, and I almost forgot about Joy Division. I never really liked Interpol, let alone the thousand other bands trying to capitalise on the sound.
