if any old school rap dude was sounding similar to that it was because they were using a vocoder. which does provide a similar effect but still requires a modicum of talent and ability to pull off smoothly.

Cher's song seems a little early to be included in this fad. Didn't it really start with T-Pain's music, and then Kayne West produced a few albums with him or something?
It's not a bad little tool to use. It's a bit like reverb in the 1980s... hopefully musicians will get the message that it just sounds dull when overused.
