I haven't played Halo since the original one, but I'm assuming the hype is all in the multiplayer. Most people just go through the single-player mode for FPS games to get a feel for things, then spend the rest of their time on multiplayer online now days. To be honest, game developers for most FPS releases are pretty much focusing on that anyway. Story-lines and single-player isn't really the focus now as much as it was then... so I can sort of understand the trend here. Single-player has pretty much become the preparation for online or multiplayer play.
