I can't vouch for B&S because I don't listen to them, but how do The Shins' songs go nowhere? They're well crafted pop songs. I know it's not your thing and I respect that, I just don't see how their music "goes nowhere".

Even though I greatly enjoy some material from these artists, I agree. But while it's true none of them invented electronic music, I think they took it in a new direction and were all very highly influencial in the subgenre we call IDM. Of the 3, I'd say Boards of Canada get more credit than they deserve.
