Beginner's Guide to Progressive Metal

I decided if I made a beginner's guide to avant-garde metal I should also make one for progressive metal. Prog metal has come under some scrutiny, a lot of complaints aimed at the fact that most prog metal bands are less about prog and more about songs that push past the 5 minute mark and usually feature clean vocals. I will be the first to admit that that is a pretty reasonable assertion to make, but just as is with every other genre in the music industry, there will always be gems in the slew of sewage. These are the bands that you can tell spent hour listening to bands like Yes, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Camel, Genesis, Gentle Giant, etc. This is metal's nod in acknowledgment of progressive rock, and as a prog rock fan I think they do a pretty good job of it. This will be a part 1 as I didn't want to overload anybody with a lengthy list, so if this one proves to be popular, I will be making it's follow-up.

01. Enslaved - "Ethica Odini" - Axioma Ethica Odini (2010)
02. Pain of Salvation - "Undertow" - Remedy (2004)
03. Devin Townsend - "Earth Day" - Terria (2001)
04. Nevermore - "Sentience 6" - This Godless Endeavor (2005)
05. Opeth - "Demon of the Fall" - My Arms, Your Hearse (1998)
06. Between the Buried and Me - "Informal Gluttony" - Colors (2007)
07. Subterranean Masquerade - "Awake" - Suspended Animation Dream (2005)
