Default Hippies

This is a poem I wrote that was published in a book with a few of my close friends. The rhyming pattern is Chaucerian (I tried to get as close as I could) and I thought it was an amusing idea.

In every generation there are those
Who do nothing more than oppose.
These people are of specific breed
And they chant their unforgetting creed:
“Make love, not war” they often cry
Parading around in multicolor tie-dye.
Their life’s goal is the face THE MAN
With a sword of peace in each hand.
Covered in armor made from free spirit
They protect the land and all that’s in it.
They are the children of Gaia with hair quite long
With a sense of togetherness you’ll never find as strong.
With their easy going attitude and smiles of harmony
They are the most accepting group you will ever see.
The possessions they carry are quite few
Just the essentials, and some Birkenstocks too.
The pipes they possess are put to good use
To seek “wisdom” and to drown out the blues.
Oh mighty Hippie, what would we do without thee?
If for not you then we would have no one to hug the tree.
