I like how the Deftones have to be a different genre just because you don't like nu metal.
Nu metal was just like any other trend in music, most of the highly publicized bands sucked, but there were some gems if you looked for them (System of a Down, Deftones, etc.). And since I've only made this point 99 times, KoRn's self-titled from 1994 is excellent as well.
As for this current indie trend,
Astro Coast is probably my favorite album of the year, but other than that the only other bands mentioned that I have heard are Wavves, No Age, and Japandroids. I don't think No Age really applies to this group, but they are awesome too. I have a Girls album and a Best Coast album around here somewhere so I'll have to get around to listening to those...
