The Meters are immense. Look-ka Py Py is one of my favourite albums from any genre.

If we're strictly talking soul (as opposed to funk) then my faves are:

1 Smoky Robinson - One Dozen Roses (Beautiful and underrated album you should check out. Features his hit 'Tears of A Clown' which is not even the best song here)
2 Otis Redding - Otis Blue (some of the best vocals I've ever heard)
3 Ike and Tina Turner - River Deep, Mountain High
4 Stevie Wonder - Talking Book
5 Curtis Mayfield - S/T
