But the biggest problem is that marriage is a church thing, and then it starts to involve people that are absolutely positive they know god's personal opinion, and everyone else's is wrong.

Civil Partnerships / Unions / Whatever you want to call them vary by state. I don't live in California, so the partnership you reference does not apply to me. I live in Kentucky, where same-sex unions of any kind are not allowed. You don't have the ability to visit your partner in the hospital, no rights regarding monetary issues, things of that nature.
It'd help your argument considerably if you'd ever bothered to check out facts.
