Wow, I actually agree with you on something...(: Howl is in second place, Spirited away 3rd, but I definitely agree it lacks that certain something.
For anyone trying to get into anime (I wouldn't consider myself a fan actually, too much kiddy s
hit to wade through) I'd agree with Grave of the fireflies, Akira as the golden standard, Ghost in the shell, Ninja Scroll for some blood and guts, ANYTHING by the sadly departed Satoshi Kon (apart from Tokyo godfathers, that's just crap), especially Perfect blue and Magnetic rose segment of Memorizu which is brill, and Vampire D, but that's really it as far as really quality anime films...for grownups that is.... :\
Oh and track down the subbed version of Mononoke the TV show, it's the best thing TV anime has ever had to offer...srsly (nout to do with the film btw).
