Technically? They're indestructible. They run really very well. And they're really easy to maintain (huge bonnet, tiny engine, gearbox in front, it's brilliant). Your problem, again, would be rust.
My former father in law bought a R4 round about 1980. A hole had rusted in the middle of one door in less than one year time.
Another downside of the Renault 4 are the brakes. Above 50km/h they are frighteningly bad. They just fade beyond compare. I've heard the brakes that are on the 1.1 liter version (the GTL) are a bit better.
As far as driving goes, it's an absolute joy to drive. The gearbox is just brilliant, the steering is beautiful and the view is incredible. It's really easy to park because of all the windows.
So, if you drive careful and if you can put the car inside, please buy yourself an R4. They are really really nice.
