2pac may have been a step above the rest lyrically for what was popular at the time, and what was mainstream rap at the time. But the truth is, long before him and long after him underground or lesser known hip hop acts have been spitting these so called poetic rhymes (I really wouldn't use the word "poetic" as an adjective, since in reality all raps are poetry).

As for examples, try A Tribe Called Quest. They were a hip hop group founded in 1985 and they are very creative both lyrically and musically.
