Groove metal sits in-between thrash metal and Nu-metal from a stylistic perspective. Its not as fast as thrash but certainly heavier. Pantera were the undisputed leaders of the genre and Lamb of God in the 00`s have carried on that tradition.

Despite the criticism of Pantera on here. I`ve always said they were one of the best metal bands that ever existed and any band that starts up a genre is normally worth something. The Pantera albums from "Cowboys From Hell" onwards are essential metal from the 90`s and absolute classics and Phil Anselmo as a metal vocalist is almost unsurpassed.

I also think the 90`s was the best decade for metal (I mentioned this on another thread here) as I think there are so many classic albums in this decade as it was a decade that laid the foundations for some of the best stuff that came out in the 00`s. I know this is not a popular opinion as a lot of metal fans on here dislike this period but given that groove metal is my fav metal genre this is probably no surprise.

Groove metal just wasn`t about Pantera but Sepultura probably the best metal band that ever existed, put out two of the best groove metal albums ever in "Chaos A.D" and "Roots"

I would also say that if Pantera hadn`t existed there would be no Lamb of God as Lamb of God are the Pantera of the 00`s. As much as I love Lamb of God, Pantera were the better band.

Besides Lamb of God I also hear the Pantera influence in extreme metal bands such as Meshuggah etc. So yer their influence may not be as great as somebody like Slayer but they are still pretty influential.
