I don't know if I'd really call it parallel universes. It's more like Steven King came up with a bunch of characters and ideas to build a story out of and wound up thinking of two different stories to tell that he couldn't decide between so he published both. The details are mostly the same but presented in totally different ways so that they tell two completely different stories. It's hard to explain, but it's very interesting to read the two of them back to back.
