this and One Hot Minute (being the clinically depressed black sheep in the Chili's back catalogue) are the only ones I would still listen to, having been a total fanatic when I was younger loving every album. this was obviously their big transition into classic melody, leaving the funk/metal thing behind slightly.

the title track has pretty much everything i'd want from a pop song - cool changes, good lyrics and no showboating. lav iiiit

I very much like this album.

HI
I love to hear them .

Here is a few more tid-bits about this album. The lyrics for Californication was actually penned in 1991 during the writing process for Blood Sugar Sex Magik.

Great B-Sides of the album include: Gong Li, Instrumental 1 & 2, Teatro Jam, Phat Dance, Over Funk, Quixoticelixer, How Strong, and Bunkerhill, which wasn't recorded until the By the Way album and was on a Fortune Faded B-Side.

haha nice review, I do think that it is a little too critical, in the same sense the originator of this thread was way too kind. Californication is an okay album maybe even a good album. It is definately not "flawless" or a "Great Classic".

BSSM and before is better

Christ its closer to allegory then metaphor, as I said before wait until you've done more than fourth grade english please. All you really know is about periods and punctuations, stick to that. Its imagery, simple as that.

Oh my god, lay off him. If he's "just in seventh grade" that doesn't justify saying he's as dumb as a fourth grader because he doesn't know what a metaphor is, which I think he might. I mean, sometimes when I read these types of posts I wonder if your incentive is to be productive, or start an argument. Why you would want to start an argument, I don't know. But you act fifteen, I hope your not thirty for your maturities sake.
Maybe it's just arrogance.

Ethan's post there is two years old, back when ethan was a total douche who loved slipknot. Back then ethan loved all kinds of shitty metal and as such was a shitty poster.

So yeah, a bit late there tbh.

Oh, well that taught me a lesson. From now on I'll look at the date. =/

I love the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Californication is a good album, but is by no means a classic. For me, this album doesn't come close to BSSM or OHM for that matter. Old rhcp were better.

Haha. I agree old RHCP were better but I wouldn't consider BSSM or OHM to be part of the "old" era.

Antonio 06-20-2009 06:37 PM

yeah i see those two, especially BSSM, as pretty much the bridge between old and new

Rainfall 08-26-2009 12:00 PM

RHCP WERE better when they were on all their drugs, but you have to give them props for cleaning up. Their music before was way stranger, too.
Nice review, too brief though.

jacklovezhimself 09-03-2009 04:08 PM

Is great/classic supposed to be better than flawless?
I know some classic albums that are far from flawless.

Kiedis wasn't on drugs for Mother's Milk or Blood Sugar Sex Magik though...

Eh, yeah but Flea had cleaned up his act for the most part and Smith wasn't a major factor in their sound. You are right though that Frusciante's drug use was a driving force in their sound...

I like this album from start to end. I still listen to it every once in awhile. I will say I enjoy their older stuff more. Just the feel of their older stuff appeal to me more. I have never seen them live, yet. But from what I've heard they give great shows. I respect them for actually caring to try and give the best show they can each an every time.
thanks

Good. The first half was excellent, in my opinion the second half was ****.
Nevertheless, it could be considered classic, who doesnt know this album?
Oh, and Around the World is the funnest song to play on bass, ever and always.

Here4theBeer 05-23-2010 03:56 AM

I voted 'Good'. Its a nice fun LP for warm days like today but it doesnt exactly break the atom. It does nothing new but what it does do, it does very well.

frenchie 05-26-2010 08:14 PM

woohoo, love this album and love the RHCP. It sucks that I always used to listen to this album with my ex so that kind of ruined it a bit. I still listen to it every now and then, it reminds me of simpler days...

Ive been a Chili's Fan for 22 years and counting and I rate this one right up their as one of their best! great great review of each song! 9.5/10 for me

s_k 01-15-2011 07:16 AM

I've always thought by the way is their best album and severely overrated, but I guess this is their second best. I never really liked their older work.
Pity the sound quality is just exceptionally bad. Really want the original multitrack of this album and do it all over again.

Batty 01-15-2011 02:38 PM

Good music spolit by poor production, I can't listen to the whole CD on my HiFi but can in the car. Loudness wars claim another CD.

s_k 01-15-2011 03:32 PM

There's an unmastered version available online. It's not multitrack, just unmastered.
And I'm not sure if this is just loudness war. I mean, they really ****ed up badly. The whole disc distorts, cracks and rattles. It's awful.
I have it on vinyl too. It's not mine, still need to tape it. Interested in a rip of that, in case it's any better?

SGR 01-16-2011 04:41 PM

I actually never cared much for this one. BSSM craps all over it in my opinion and one of the biggest reason is it flows much better and seems more focused.
