Soo I decided to try Elliott Smith out on a whim and upon reading all the threads about him I've found that.... there are a lot of arguments over stupid sh-t.
But, I'm still not sure where to start-- of course, it's hard to base an opinion on 30 second iTunes clips. I bought "Pitseleh" as it jumped out at me, but now I can't decide if I should just buy the whole XO album, or the whole Either/or album... I can only get one right now. |
I prefer XO to Either/Or, there's just so much more going for it. Either/Or is good if you want classic Elliott Smith, but XO is a better place to start.

I really love Elliott Smith, been really getting into him lately. He has gradually climbed up my last.fm chartsI own this album on vinyl and it's amazing. I do not have a cd or digital version of this album though, sadly.

Good review. In terms of individual songs, I think this album contains some of his best. Songs like Angeles, Between The Bars, and Say Yes often appear as peoples favorite Elliott Smith songs. But as an entire album, I don't think this is even my second favorite album of his. My first is Roman Candle and it always surprises me to hear that people really dislike that record. After Roman Candle, I prefer his self titled. I suppose I prefer his lo-fi work to his more pop songs. Actually now that I think about it, I rank my Elliott Smith albums in the order they were released;
Roman Candle Elliott Smith Either/Or XO Figure 8 From The Basement Of The Hill |
