The Davey Moore Album Review and Contemplation Zone

I review a lot of things. I decided that cluttering review forum would be useless. So, I decided to make my own special Davey Moore thread. I can feel the nice aura of specialness wash over me.

Also, I have a sort of short style when it comes to reviewing. I've heard people say they are too short. They probably are. I decided that all my reviews in here will be edited in length so that the quality shows through. A paragraph or two is all I'll be doing. It'll be like Christgau's reviews but I won't be as much of a **** and I have a better taste in music.

Since we all love the past, here is an archive of my past reviews. O, nostalgia!

Gang of Four - Entertainment (1979)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...ainment%21.jpg

All the great punk bands branched away from the genre about two years after they started to play it. However, in the work of Gang of Four, we see a band emerge that doesn't start out as strictly a punk band and then mutate, we see one of the first punk hybrids, a band who has all the attitude that made that big bang of a cultural movement so great, yet throws away the instruction manual saying "Idiot's Guide to solely playing 3 Chords." The result is a masterpiece.

This album tackles diverse subjects, and not just multiple songs tackling a range of subjects, but sometimes a single song and even a single verse. The song Natural's Not in It is a funky, lightning paced song shoots images out at you rapid-fire, each saying something different for different people. Here's a snippet of the song, as an example of what I mean: http://www.last.fm/music/Gang+of+Fou...%27s+Not+in+It

Political and furious in nature, it is a rare manifestation of everything that is great, sacred and perfect about some genres and scenes.

Best Tracks: Ether, Natural's Not In It

9.8/10

As the first song rolls through, you can tell that this band knows they're good. Not even good. Excellent. Great. For example, take the first line of the first song: "I don't have to sell my soul. He's already in me." Who exactly? Maybe god. Or the devil. Sh*t, maybe it's John Lennon. Their attitude suggests they are very important, and it's sort of deserved. This is the starting point of that British explosion during the 90s. As the album progresses you're taken on a colorful ride through slippery sounding guitars playing mellow pop tunes, with a hint of psychedelia and narcissism.

They became so big that eventually they collapsed under the expectations of their own greatness. Maybe if they sold their souls they would've lasted longer. At least their impact was felt. And that's more than some bands can claim.

Best Tracks: I Wanna Be Adored, Waterfall, I Am The Resurrection

Also, since their songs are plentiful on Youtube, here are some links to those songs:

i'm a fan of punk-funk but for some reason Gang of Four never struck me as hard as other bands of the same era. Public Image Ltd, Minutemen, and Mission of Burma all resonate higher with me than Entertainment! ever could.

most of their other releases were garbage, anyways.
