Creep On Creepin' On is the April 2011 offering of the Montreal, Canada based Timber Timbre. Aside from an interesting band name and album title (both of which I love), this group of 3 (Taylor Kirk, Simon Trottier, and Mika Posen) also offers a cinematically spooky sound that combines many elements of blues and folk.

This band has always had a ghostly quality to its sound, but in the past they have been much more folksy. This newest album seems to explore the dark, rich, blues side of the band's sound more fully than ever before. Although all of the songs are treasures on their own, it's best to listen to Creep On Creepin' On as an album. This is because the whole thing was beautifully put together and produced. It's a real treat for the ears how all of the songs fit together in a very coherent way and every song has an almost orchestral element to it. You will hear drum kit, bass, guitar, piano, and haunting vocals, but also strings, sax, and I think a handful of other wind, brass, and percussion instruments.

There is lots of focus on atmosphere and mood, and a handful of songs (Obelisk, Swamp Magic, Souvenirs) are especially eclectic instrumental tracks that sound much like the suspenseful soundtrack of a horror flick (the good kind). That being said the whole album takes its influences from a wide range of sources.

Apparently the album was recorded in a few different settings including "a converted church". While I'm not sure what "converted" means, anyone who's ever performed music in a conventional church hall will know that it generally means beautiful acoustics that are very hard to find elsewhere. The recording settings definitely made a contribution to the great sound of the album.

I highly recommend this album to anyone who's open to a wide variety of music. I give it a 9/10, and it's on my personal list of top albums of 2011 for now (there's still time for some tougher competition to come out).

Captivating review that I had to go buy the album to download, so I'm going to give it a listen and get a hard copy for the collection if I dig it.

I agree with the sentiments of this review! I was able to get front row center seats to their Vancouver show and its a highlight of my show-going career for sure.
