Pronounced "chk chk chk" 1996-Present 4 albums http://i.imgur.com/2hXh6.jpg The only album I have by these guys is Strange Weather, Isn't It? which came out in August 2010. I wanna say the first time I listened to it was February 2011, which was also the first I had heard of these guys. They're fun! Dance punk usually is. For me, I kinda wrote the genre off when I first heard of it, but when I listened to The Rapture I really got into it. So I kinda got way too excited about it, and then I ended up disappointed with a lot of the sub-par bands that come out off it. But these guys are cool. They're pretty electronic (at least on this album), and they pull it off. "The Hammer" is five minutes of a killer synth riff. Their front man's voice is awesome, especially on this track, and "Jamie, My Intentions Are Bass" has a great hook. The only other song I've heard by !!! is "Me and Giuliani Down by the School Yard (A True Story)", and after I listened to it for the first time I grabbed the album it's from but I still haven't gotten to it. But this album's good! Real good. Fun listen. |
2. A Silver Mt. Zion
Related to Godspeed You! Black Emperor 6 albums 1999-Present http://i.imgur.com/qlphb.jpg A friend of mine turned me onto GY!BE, who I really dig, and ASM was the next step. They're damn good. Godspeed is 25-minute song post-rock, ASM kinda switches between shorter songs at 4 minutes to longer songs at 15. So far, I've listened through their 2000 debut, He Has Left Us Alone But Shafts Of Light Sometimes Grace The Corners Of Our Rooms..., and Horses in the Sky which came out in 2005. Both are tremendous, moving compositions. Painstaking (in a good way) to listen to. They'll ruin your day well and good. There's really nothing I can hate on A Silver Mt. Zion about, at least not anything they did on these albums. The songwriting is amazing; "God Bless Our Dead Marines" and "Teddy Roosevelt's Guns", both from Horses in the Sky are two of my favorite songs ever. He Has Left Us Alone as a whole is even greater than that. "Broken Chords Can Sing A Little", "13 Angels Standing Guard 'round the Side of Your Bed" and "For Wanda" are damn poignant. I really have to work my way through their other albums because these two are really great. Just phenomenal. GY!BE is apocalyptic; A Silver Mt. Zion is more serene, but no less depressing. |
3. A Tribe Called Quest
Classic hip-hop 5 albums 1985-1998 http://i.imgur.com/wzcpC.png?1 man I think I just hate the letter A. another band I really need to get into more, one I've always liked but have left largely ignored. Their second album, The Low End Theory, came out in 1991, and I think I listened to it for the first time in 2006 or 2007. Anyway, what can I write about this album? It's a classic, and this is one reason I'm banging out so many of these little paragraphs tonight - because there are a lot of artists I like, but there's only so much to say about one or two albums, especially when people have already written so much about them! It'd be cool if this held some significant place in my life, like a lot of albums do, but it doesn't. it's just really damn good! the rhymes are great, the production's amazing (especially for someone who loves jazz & hip-hop), and it's just all-around a great album. it deserves the praise it gets. |
4. Alice in Chains
Layne Staley died really horribly, wow 4 albums 1987-1995, 2009-Present http://i.imgur.com/NnhFo.jpg jesus! another band I have one great album by that I really like, and I haven't listened to any of their other stuff...I slept on this one for a while. I'm not someone who like irrationally hates grunge because of this weird stigma attached to it as bad music, but I just never got around to Alice in Chains until late 2010. That's when I listened to Dirt. "Them Bones", "Dam That River", "Godsmack", "Angry Chair", "Would?"...all awesome songs. you could take just these songs and have one hell of an album, but everything on this is good. it's a classic! it deservers it! the lyrics are killer, they'll ruin your day just like ASM's, and the guitars on this album - damn. the riffs are on a whole other level. I listened to this when the Phillies ended last season in the worst way possible, so I guess there's your story for this album? it's awesome. not happy music though. there's really nothing I can say besides "listen to it", everybody who's listened to this album loves it, you can join us! |
Three comments: (1) good thread, (2) if you hate the letter A (and you'll later hate the word "the"!) why not review the albums without the A, in other words, in the example above, A Tribe Called Quest would come under T, for Tribe Called Quest, A (or even, stretching it, Q, for Quest, A Tribe Called!) and (3) since you seem to genuinely want to write about your albums, why not start a music journal? You could link it to this thread. Just a thought.
Not into any of these bands, but good writing so far. Shows real passion, and though that word is well overused these days, I think it's a vital thing to have if you're going to write about your music. Members Journal - Music Banter Looking forward to further reviews... |
Yeah, keep it up! Nice idea. I like the format you're using, and the quirky one-liner commentary. I kind of want to do something like this, but it's a hell of an undertaking because I have 500+ artists on this hard drive alone, not to mention the external. Looking forward to more.

I listened to I Get Wet on a whim because I liked PARTY HARD and my friend was into this album, and I was real pleasantly surprised! I just kinda figured it would wear thin after a few tracks but it never really did for me, and it's a fun record to listen to even years later. Apparently his other albums are more tame and emotional - I've always wanted to listen to them, but again, I just haven't gotten around to it. Still, I dig him. He's a fun guy in interviews and seems like he really does have fun with what he does. I like it! I like him and I like I Get Wet. I dunno who the supposed "real Andrew WK" is or whether it's real, but it's funny. |

Chris Cornell + Rage Against The Machine - Zack de la Rocha 3 albums 2001-2007 http://i.imgur.com/H8J89.jpg I thought this was a pretty weird matchup. Rage Against the Machine I liked quite a bit, I had their albums and they were pretty good. Disappointed to see them go. Soundgarden, they're alright, another grunge band I always meant to get into but hadn't, but they had some good songs. But combining the two seemed kinda weird. It kinda is, I guess. I only have their s/t debut, and it's pretty good, but it really drags on. 14 tracks weighing in at an hour & five minutes is pretty hefty for a band like this (pretty good, but pretty same-y) so I pretty much never listen to it all the way through. but the songs are generally pretty good. I'd prolly rather listen to RATM or the Soundgarden songs I know, but the only real problems with this album are that it sounds the same throughout and it's too long. Not bad problems to have. |
