Copped.

"on their first effort Rocka Rolla they had given us a fairly terrible interpretation of a Black Sabbath style sound in an unfocused mishmash of a debut album"

By the time of Sad Wings of Destiny the band had moved up several notches in terms of quality and gave us a very good album, but the following Sin After Sin was even better and gave us Judas Priest at their most interesting. But the daddy of them all is surely Stained Class a 1970's metal monster and the band who never quite match the dark majesty of this album again.

British Steel had me hooked straight away, I've listened to SC like twice and can't remember it being any good. I'll give it another listen.

I still buy them. ;)

Will steal this album and the one Briks mentioned as I really like British Steel.

Cheers.

Painkiller > Sin After Sin > British Steel.

I'll be interested to see what you think!

Because nobody has posted them yet....

Love that old footage. They look more deep purple or even Skynard pre leather. Halford had some pipes. I re listened ro Rocka rolla. Better than I remembered. Have to say screaming for vengeance and sad wings are my two faves.

That's because British Steel is pop metal and designed to hook general listeners. SC on the other hand is a pure metal album and really only for people seriously into metal, it's one of the great metal albums of the 70s and is almost like a blueprint for the technical metal of the 1980s.

Really didn't like the album.

I replied to this post in my journal if you are interested in hearing what I think about the albums.

I love Judas Priest, I think it's one of those bands I could listen to all their songs without getting tired.

This album is not exception for me. The debut is rather different from what they did later, but still awesome.

not a Priest fan but I love this album. Tried several times to get into the ones after this and just couldn't. Rocka Rolla is a totally underrated rock classic

That's literally how I felt, though I've since gone back and listened to Sin After Sin and British Steel and I found that I liked those a lot more than when I first listened to them. Give it some time.

Anyway yeah the allure of RR for me is a combination of
  • Sick guitar riffs (like on "One For The Road" and "Never Satisfied")
  • Halford's vocals
  • Great lyrics (like on "Dying To Meet You" and "Cheater")
  • And the fact that all of the songs stand out on their own

I fully embrace the notion that I'm in the minority saying that this is a spectacular album, but I've just seriously yet to find an album that has such great guitar work and complements the guitar playing with great lyrics and vocals, and has fantastic song writing.
