Default Alanis Morissette - Flavors of Entanglement

Alanis Morissette
Flavors of Entanglement - 2008

Stepping a small step away from her well known "angry girl" music, Alanis Morissette's newly released album Flavors of Entanglement is an insightful, melodic, somewhat peaceful, yet still bitchy 11 track compilation.

Track 1 - Citizen of the Planet
The track begins with a haunting bongo-like beat with poetic political verses which move into an unexpected and powerful chorus. My first thought was "whoa, you go girl!" I still get chills when I hear it...
Favorite line: And I come alive/ and I get giddy/ and I am taken and globally naturalized
Rating: 8/10

Track 2 - Underneath
This song (in my opinion) is talking about how we are focusing our energy on fixing the wrong things in our lives. It is catchy, and has good intentions, but it's not her best work.
Favorite line: There is no difference in what we're doing in here/ that doesn't show up as bigger symptoms out there
Rating: 5/10

Track 3 - Straitjacket
At this point in the album you can't help but think "what has Ryan Reynolds done to our Alanis? Where's the angry fuck you men music?" Fear not, she delivers. With an almost techno-like upbeat sound, Morissette lets it out. This song will definately be one of those that I sing with my drunken girlfriends.
Favorite line: Conclusion you come to of me routinely incorrect/ I don't know who you're talking to with such fucking disrespect
Rating: 6/10

Track 4 - Versions of Violence
My first though upon hearing this song was "Amy Lee." I couldn't help but to think that this track serves as an ode to victims of abuse. It's got a powerful sound, but the lyrics are mediocre.
Favorite line: These versions of violence, sometimes subtle sometimes clear/ And the ones that go unnoticed still leave their mark once disappeared
Rating: 4/10

Track 5 - Not As We
I'm at a loss of what to say about this one, except that it is a beautifully composed break-up song.
Favorite line: I'm faking it 'til I'm pseudo making it
Rating: 6/10

Track 6 - In Praise of the Vulnerable Man
If you've ever been an 18 year old girl who has ever been in love, you'll enjoy this song. It's basically saying how wonderful it is when someone you love finally puts down their guard and lets you in.
Favorite line: This is in praise of the vulnerable man/ why don't you lead the rest of your cavalry home
Rating: 5/10

Track 7 - Moratorium
This album never fails to deliver catchy music, and this song is no exception. Basically an f-you to commitment, it is an overall good song.
Favorite line: I declare a moratorium on all thing relationship
Rating: 7/10

Track 8 - Torch
The most radio friendly of the tracks, it's like a diary covering the pain of moving on from a relationship alone. There are a lot of "what I miss about you" situations happening.
Favorite line: One step one prayer I soldier on, simulating moving on
Rating: 5/10

Track 9 - Giggling Again for No Reason
At this point in the album, I'm thinking "Where is my Jagged Little Pill cd?" I don't even know what this song is about, I'm pretty sure I've skipped it everytime. It has something to do with being just as happy alone.
Favorite line: Pass
Rating: 2/10 (at least it's not Amy Winehouse...)

Track 10 - Tapes
This song, after the dreadful preceding, lifted my hopes for the album overall. It's really a beautiful ballad, and her voice is as great as ever. When I hear it I want to bust out my lighter.
Favorite line: All these tapes in my head swirl around/ keeping my vibe down/ all these thoughts in my head aren't my own/ wreaking havoc
Rating: 8/10

Track 11 - Incomplete
It sounds nice... but it's not my style. The first word I can think of to describe it is "smooth." Until the chorus, which I rather enjoy. I think it's about being happy with where you are in life, but never giving up the things you want.
Favorite line: Ever unfolding, ever expanding, ever adventurous, and torturous... but never done
Rating: 6/10

I can't stress enough how different this is from Morissettes past albums. The tone is completely different, and on a few of the tracks she's singing with more soul than I've heard from her before. As decent as this album is, and despite my liking of Alanis Morissette, this just isn't working. Not that it's bad, mind you, but it's just not the same.

Favorite song: It's a tie between Citizen of the Planet and Tapes
Overall rating: 5.5/10

I have not listened to her music since her debut which was obviously huge but a nice review and maybe this departure will gain her a new set of fans.

Sorry to bump a really old thread but I'm in the mood for this at the moment.

She's still writing and recording as well as doing some acting. She did a short acoustic tour this past fall. I guess she prefers to stay really low key these days.
