Metallica's The Black Album

A nice album. Not their best (Ride the lightning perhaps?) but something great !!!

I think calling it a sellout album is a bit overblown. I think they enjoyed the music, & it's a good change of pace during live shows. I don't however think it is their best album by any stretch of the imagination, even if it was more accessible to the casual music listener.

Yeah I agree, this was a great album. Most of the time artists get a lot of credit for taking things in a new direction, but Metallica didn't seem to get this. The fans complained when they made a music video for One, and complained when they made the Black album. I never really understood that.

For some reason, I don't think that the people who like the heaviness from the early Metallica albums would be that crazy about The Haxan Cloak. They're in the wrong because THC (heh, didn't notice that acronym before) rules, but you may be barking up the wrong tree.

great review. I like the way you write and you have given a lot of good information. its personally one of my favorite Metallica albums along with riding the lightning. I never understand why people accused Metallica of selling out with the black album.

The album was the beginning of the end for Metallica in my view. The first four were absolute epic masterpieces. Then the Black album came out and was way too commercial and lost the edge of their previous releases. After Black, the downward spiral began with nothing but pure garbage until Death Magnetic.

I still love and listen to their first four albums, but my opinion of Metallica dropped substantially, and that all started with Black.

I lost interest in the band after And Justice For All, the band up to that point had made it pretty damn big but then the One video was made and they blew up even more but weren't satisfied. Strangely enough they were inspired by a band for years they supposedly hated everything about (Motley Crue) and hired Dr Feelgood's producer Bob Rock for their next album which as a longtime fan was a headscratcher and signaled to me they had in fact decided that it was about the money. More power to them and cool, that was their decision, but I never did like the Black album and the band ended for me with And justice.
