Blur - The Magic Whip

Blur is one of those bands who have a tier of great albums and then a tier of albums that are solid but get forgotten because of the hoopla about the aefermentioned great records.

Great Albums:
Parklife
Modern Life Is Rubbish

Good Albums:
The Great Escape
Think Tank

JUST Solid Albums:
Leisure
13
Blur

MUSIC TASTE IS SUBJECTIVE PEOPLE. I know there's a breed of music listener out there that hates The Great Escape, as well as Leisure. This is my opinion.

THE ACTUAL REVIEW, YAYYYYYY
The Magic Whip, like every other Blur effort, does deserve a description of it's own. There's no way that you can be like, "WELL IF YOU LIKE THIS RECORD THEN YOU'LL LOVE THE NEW ONE BECAUSE IT SOUNDS JUST LIKE IT", becuause Blur aren't that type of band, even if the first track here, Lonesome Street, SCREAMS Modern Life Is Rubbish. The Magic Whip introduces a more depressing side, even though it's all masked by lyrics that can be playful at times. It's very good at taking the old sounds and putting a slower, more depressing twist on them, kinda like Sleater-Kinney's The Hot Rock. Overall this record is pretty good, placing it next to Think Tank and The Great Escape.

8.5/10

Aside from a few singles, I haven't listened to a lot of Blur's work, but I figured I'd give this album a go just for the sake of it.

I have to admit, pretty solid stuff throughout the album. I'm definitely glad I checked it out.

I'd give it somewhere around a 7/10 overall.

Have to say that I really like this album even though it's maybe not their strongest. I reckon 8/10

Yeah that's what I say. Pretty much every song here is enjoyable to a certain point, even if that certain point isn't as high as some of their other work.

I don't really think this is a good album to introduce yourself to the band with. Parklife is more playful and accessible, also it's their best in my opinion.

Thanks for the rec, I'll definitely check that out sometime!

The only reason I really want to listen to this, despite not being a fan of Blur, is because the cover is really really nice. It's funny how much impact a cover can have. May well give it a spin.

The cover is ironic, it reflects a mood that is opposite of what the music is. They do that with the lyrics sometimes on the record too, the lyrics will be happy or silly but the instrumentals will be very depressing.

Highway 61 revisited is such a guitar and lyrical masterpiece, every single beat of the guitar falls in line with the lyrics, though there are only 3 cords, it's a hard to play song! Like a rolling stone, classic of course, i recommend this to anyone!

I completely agree, but what has that got to do with The Magic Whip?
